- Prayer/voodoo
- What Color Is Your Parachute
- Networking
Maybe they work a little too well, because OMG I now have three jobs (shelver, baker, and retail clerk for an awesome handmade paper shop).
And as far as What Color Is Your Parachute, I think it genuinely helped me to think strategically about what I really, sincerely need and cannot compromise on (when I try to get around it I either a. can't pass the interview, or b. cannot do the work without desperately wanting to die), and how to get it. As a result of studying this book I ended up donating some free labor to a business I passionately wanted to work for, and now I do, for pay, for now. Progress.
This job also provided me a good reference for my OTHER new job, which I was referred to by some close friends.
Backing me up on a spiritual plane was my patron saint Oscar Wilde who I literally pray to every night. I think it helps me draw on the, ummm, quantum field?
It's my view now that you probably need all three of these things (book learning, friends who will go to bat for you, and a fucking rain machine) in order to get a job.
This is a rickety life I'm building and I don't want to congratulate myself yet. I still won't have much money but it'll feel like a lot. What's certain, however, is that you really have to go to extreme fucking lengths these days to get part-time work. I hear you have to summon Lord Satan himself in order to get benefits. I'm not complaining! We just need to know these things.
